Best Kenya Safari Destinations for Wildlife and Scenery

Compare Kenya's leading safari destinations, including Maasai Mara, Amboseli, Tsavo and Lake Nakuru, and find out what makes each one different.

Maasai Mara landscape in Kenya — WildLens Adventure

Kenya’s safari destinations are not interchangeable. Each has its own combination of wildlife, scenery, habitats and travel experience. Choosing the right destination therefore depends on what you most want to see and how you want to spend your time in the bush.

Maasai Mara: classic big-game country

The Maasai Mara is one of Kenya’s best-known wildlife destinations. Its open grasslands support a wide range of plains game and predators, making it particularly attractive to travellers who want varied wildlife viewing. The wider Mara ecosystem is also associated with the annual movement of wildebeest and other herbivores across the Serengeti-Mara system.

Amboseli: elephants and dramatic views

Amboseli National Park is known for elephants and for views toward Mount Kilimanjaro. Its mix of open plains, woodland, wetlands and dry areas creates varied habitats within a relatively compact park.

Tsavo: scale and varied landscapes

Tsavo offers a very different sense of wilderness because of its scale and variety of habitats. Wildlife includes elephants, lions, buffalo, giraffe and other plains species, while areas such as Mzima Springs add a different dimension to a safari route. Early morning and late afternoon are productive periods for game viewing.

Lake Nakuru: wildlife and birdlife

Lake Nakuru is a useful choice for travellers who want to combine wildlife viewing with a destination known for birdlife and distinctive Rift Valley scenery. It can also work well as part of a broader circuit rather than as a stand-alone destination.

How should you choose?

  • Want classic big-game viewing? Consider the Maasai Mara.
  • Love elephants and dramatic scenery? Consider Amboseli.
  • Prefer expansive wilderness and varied habitats? Consider Tsavo.
  • Want a compact itinerary with Rift Valley scenery and birdlife? Consider Lake Nakuru.

You do not have to choose only one. A route combining two or three destinations can create a more varied safari, provided there is enough time for the journey to be worthwhile.
